Description
Johannes B and White by Bencasso B is a spectral homage to Brahms rendered in charcoal's most ghostly register. Stark black lines carve out the contours of the composer's coat beard and features but they soften and blur into the stark white backdrop creating an impression of Brahms as memory rather than man. The image floats as if unfinished yet deeply complete a portrait born from absence and suggestion rather than detail.
Created as part of the Brahms series for the music video of the Piano Quartet no 3 in C minor Opus 60 performed by the Rilke Quartet with pianist John Chernoff this piece appears alongside other animated charcoal and pastel works. The videos premiered in February 2022 on the Rilke Music channel Bencasso Barnesquiat art channel and Benjamin Barnes's personal channel featuring layered footage from Buena Vista Park and the Upper Haight in San Francisco.
In Johannes B and White Bencasso distills Brahms into lines breath and silence evoking both the solitude and solidity of a musical titan. It is less about capturing Brahms's likeness and more about tracing the echo of his presence an artistic meditation on legacy created through simplicity and space.
